The Thalamus relays sensory and motor signals to the cerebral cortex. It also regulates consciousness, sleep, and alertness. The Hypothalamus is a portion of the brain that contains a number of number of small nuclei with multiple functions. One of it's most important functions is to link the nervous system to the endocrine system via the pituitary gland. The Fornix is a C-shaped bundle of nerve fibers in the brain that carries signals from the hippocampus to the mammillary bodies and then to the anterior nuclei of thalamus. The Pineal Body, otherwise known as Pineal Gland, is a small endocrine gland in the vertebrate brain that produces melatonin, which effects sleep patterns in seasonal and circadian rythms.
