Ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians began developing the first lenses. Eyeglasses were first invented in Italy between 1268 and 1289. The inventor is unknown. The early versions of eyeglasses were only worn by scholars and monks. They were worn by either being held in front of the eyes or being balanced on the nose.
